saturday 9: grandma got run over by a reindeer

Saturday 9: Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (1979)

1) According to a marketing research firm, this song is both one of the most played and most hated songs of the season. Do you like it?
heh if it’s one of the most hated, then why do people play it so much? i don’t really care for it myself. i know it’s supposed to be funny, but i don’t condone violence on grandmas.

2) In this song, Grandma’s troubles start when she drinks too much eggnog. Do you like eggnog?
i do! well, i did. i’m afraid now it’ll give me too much of a tummy ache.

3) In the song, Grandpa recovers from losing Grandma by drinking beer and playing cards with Cousin Mel. Will you be celebrating the holidays with cousins?
no, probably not. we used to always be all together, all the cousins and second cousins and all, but as those in my grandma’s generation have passed on, we don’t have the get-togethers we used to always have at the holidays.

4) When did you most recently drink a beer? Was it in a bottle, a can or a glass?
i haven’t drank beer in years. i did so in college once, as the loser of a card game we were playing. it was in a bottle, and i was supposed to chug the whole bottle all in one gulp but seeing i never drank and couldn’t stand the smell…i just took a long sip before putting it down still about half-filled, even though others were calling me out for not going through with the chug, since that was my punishment. bleah. never finished that bottle and haven’t touched it since.

5) The lyrics refer to “pudding of fig.” In “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” the carolers demand figgy pudding. Yet despite its popularity in holiday songs, Sam has never tasted fig pudding. Have you?
no, i haven’t. i don’t know that i’ve even tried a fig, except for the one in a fig newton, and i didn’t care for it.

6) Thinking of holiday sweets, would you prefer a gingerbread cookie or slice of pumpkin pie?
i would prefer pumpkin pie, but sadly, i can’t have either.

7) This song was recorded by a duo named Elmo & Patsy. It occurs to Sam that she has never met anyone named Elmo. How about you? Any Elmos in your life?
just the red fuzzy monster. 😛

8) Do you need snow to get “into the spirit?”
nope! i’d rather not need snow, actually. although i guess you could say i’d need a lot to get me into the spirits. but snow is definitely not one of them!

9) Random question: Are you going to get/have you gotten a flu shot this year?
i had to get one in my condition. however, they stopped the funding for me to get it at work so i had to get it from the doctor, who charges a lot more for it, including an “administering fee.”

saturday 9: chuck e’s in love

Saturday 9: Chuck E.’s in Love (1979)

1) In this song, Chuck E.’s friends look for him at the pool hall and the drugstore. If we want to find you on a Saturday afternoon, where should we look?
well, usually, at work, but lately, at home.

2) The lyrics tell us his friends know something up with Chuck E because he’s even combed his hair. So here’s a question about your hair: do you usually use a blow dryer or let it air dry?
i let it air dry, although it takes more than a day to be completely dry.

3) In this song, Ricki Lee sings that she spotted Chuck E. at the Pantages, a grand old Los Angeles theater. Nearly 100 years old, the Pantages was originally a movie palace and was renovated in the 1980s for concerts and theatrical productions. Tell us about a cool landmark in your town.
i don’t know that there are any, as this place used to be all sugar cane not more than 30 years ago. i guess the walmart is now a landmark, but it’s not very cool.

4) “Chuck E.” is a real person. Chuck E. Weiss is a blues musician and DJ who hung around with Ricki Lee and her boyfriend … until he fell in love. Have you ever had a friendship fall by the wayside when one of you entered a romantic relationship?
yes, although they come back when it ultimately fails.

5) Rickie Lee was once married to a French musician named Pascal Nabet-Meyer. Say something to us in French.
voulez vous coucher avec moi c’est soi 😛

6) When her popularity was at its height, Rickie Lee appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone twice. Who have you seen on a recent magazine cover?
i think it was sandra bullock, with her two kids.

7) Rolling Stone called Rickie Lee “the duchess of cool.” Who is the coolest person you know?
my co-worker is very cool.

8) 1979 was a good year for Rickie Lee, what with her big hit record and the Rolling Stone covers. But it was a terrible year for The Who, because eleven of their fans died during an Ohio concert. What’s your favorite Who song?
the song that comes to mind is a song my dad used to play a lot but i don’t know the title. i guess i’ll choose “my generation,” which i know as a remake.

9) Rickie Lee moved to New Orleans, a city she fell in love with after a visit. Have you ever gone to a vacation spot and wished you could just stay there forever?
yes, i sometimes think that when going to the outer islands. not as many people! haha 😛

23. Are you a shopaholic?
no, not really.

24. What are some songs that always make you feel better?
it depends on the mood. i have songs that cheer me up when i’m sad, and songs that calm me down when i’m angry. i think it’s just music in general that makes me feel better. 🙂

saturday 9: boulevard of broken dreams

yay! the snow is back on wordpress! 🙂

Saturday 9: Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2004)

1) The “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” video begins with the gentlemen of Green Day dealing with car trouble. If your car overheated, what’s the first thing you would do to remedy the situation?
pull over and let it cool down? i’m not sure. i’d at least pull over to google it!

2) Thinking of cars, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong has had his share of trouble behind the wheel and was busted for driving well beyond the speed limit. Was your last ticket for parking, or was it a moving violation?
speeding, i think. i don’t know that i’ve ever gotten a parking ticket.

3) Billie Joe says “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was inspired by the Edward Hopper painting, “Nighthawks.” Tell us about a piece of artwork that you enjoy. (Yes, the macaroni picture frame created for you by your nephew counts.)
i like most artwork, but i guess since you added the last bit, i enjoy the ones that are hanging in my mom’s room–a collection of artwork from my nieces and my son when they were all much younger. it’s so cute and funny to look at.

4) Let’s go back to childhood. Was the home where you grew up located on a boulevard, an avenue, a street, a lane or a road?
a boulevard.

5) This song won Green Day a Grammy for Record of the Year. What positive feedback have you received recently?
one of the RTs called me up yesterday afternoon and asked if she could bring a bunch of my former coworkers around to look at “all the awesomeness” like the other RT did earlier (and then in the background, i heard that RT yell out, “yes! all the awesomeness! we looooooooove you!”). although i protested that i have any awesomeness to show, i admit that that request made me feel nice. 🙂

6) Green Day uses their Facebook page to let more than 32 millions know what the group is doing. What’s the last thing you posted to social media?
it will be this post. 🙂 haha. i think i tweeted a bunch of things last week or so.

7) In 2004, when this song was popular, Ken Jennings had a still unbeaten string of 74 wins on Jeopardy! What game show do you think you’d do well on?
maybe win, lose, or draw? i like to draw. i don’t know that it’s still around, though. i caught a snippet of craig ferguson’s new game show, and i think i might do okay on that one.

8) Also in 2004, Lance Armstrong was in the midst of his own Tour de France winning streak. Now we know he cheated. Tell us about a time you broke the rules.
he cheated? wow. i have some reading to do after i post this 😛 i had an a/c unit installed without following the correct guidelines to have one on our property, and i got a fine for that. 😦 it’s still not up to code but i don’t know how to get it there. luckily, i haven’t been fined again.

9) 2004 is when Morgan Spurlock released Super Size Me, his documentary about eating nothing but McDonald’s for a month. What’s the last fast food restaurant you visited?
my sister brought home some kfc last night. the one i personally visited might have been jack in the box, i think.

sunday stealing: consider yourself meme

Consider Yourself Meme

1) Of the various cultures, ethnicities or nationalities you belong to, which most strongly do you consider yourself?
i’m not sure…i’m a mix of ethnicities but don’t really practice their customs. at one stage of my life, i was more heavily into one culture than my others, but now? probably just the average american culture.

2) Is there a culture you cannot claim heritage from but which you feel quite close to?
hm, i don’t think so? i think we’re all just so assimilated right now that it’s hard to distinguish what practices come from where.

3) What’s one language you wish you knew fluently?
i’m starting to wish i knew japanese, since i play the japanese version of tsum tsum a lot!

4) If you could move anywhere in the world and be guaranteed a job, etc., where would you go?
you know what? i’d stay right here. i honestly don’t think i could live anywhere else. maybe another island in the chain, but still, i’d choose the general area of here.

5) If you had a time machine, and could witness any one event without altering or disturbing it, what would you want to see?
hmm. i really don’t know. i’m not really into history. although mysteries intrigue me, so i’d maybe want to see something that was controversial so i know what really happened…but that’s a bit morbid, i think, to see!

6) Have problems sleeping?
recently, yes. i’ve been bedridden for nearly a week so my body just is not tired.

7) Are you free with your feelings?
hmm. i’d say most times, but then again, a lot of people have a hard time reading me, so maybe not.

8) What is the one outfit/piece of clothing/accessory you own that makes you feel incredibly good whenever you wear it? Why?
i have a long slinky black dress that i love for the way it feels on my skin (the material is so smooth and soft) and the way it twirls around my legs. i love wearing it and walking while twisting my hips so the material swishes about my legs. i’m weird.

9) What do you do to make yourself feel better when you’re in a funk?
listen to music! while stuck in bed, i’ve been listening to internet radio stations that play all ’80s tunes and just have had fun singing along to these songs i haven’t heard in ages! and if i let myself think about it a little, i start to get wistful and teary. *sigh* but other than that, music is what helps keep me happy! i just need to stop thinking about it and just let the music take me to wherever i need to go.

10) Has anyone ever surprised you in a way that let you know you were special? How?
yes, the hubs is pretty good at that. and i get really nice things from the kids at times. and i don’t mean only the physical gifts and letters and stuff…just even them popping in to say hi and seeing how i am, giving me a hug, or just wanting to chat about their day, even though they are in other grades now, makes me feel special. the fact that they took time out of their day to come to see me makes me feel loved and special enough that they thought of me. it’s so nice. ❤️ makes this crazy job worth it sometimes. 🙂

11) When you are having a “good day,” how do you spread the happiness to others?
just smile. 🙂 i’ve been thanked for smiling, which is weird, but i guess if it helped to brighten their day, then fine! there’s also an old, homeless man who sits on the corner with a sign that says, “i will accept any help, even if it’s just a smile.”

12) What is one thing that puts you in a bad mood, no matter how good you were previously feeling?
thinking about the end. well, it’s not so much a bad mood, as it is a sad one. i think what makes me grouchy or irritated is being around rude people. that can instantly turn a good day into a sour one.

13) Would you rather live in a world with or without technology such as computers, cars, airplanes, bombs?
with technology, but not with the harmful kind. we hurt each other with just our words; we don’t need any more other things that hurt.

14) If you had to live without either heating in your house or air conditioning, which one would you keep?
i would keep the air conditioning. 🙂 it does get hot enough to need it, especially after the brutal summer we had. when it does get cooler, it’s nice in that you can get all cozy snuggling up. no heater needed!

15) If you had to own five dogs, what kind would you get?
do they have to be all the same type? my sister’s ex-husband’s aunty had 5 rottweilers, and they were absolutely great dogs! she was this tiny thing, and she had these lovely dogs who protected her and were great companions. well, the male one was kept outside, and he was the protector. the other 4 females stayed in the house with her and were her companions. they were so gentle and loving. i’d want that! there’s no way 5 rottweilers could live in my tiny apartment, though, so maybe i’d have … 2? … and then the other 3 be tiny dogs, maybe like yorkshires or silkies. oh! i’ve always loved the king charles spaniels! or like those pompom ball ones…are they pomeranians? or like the japanese ones, that look so silky? well. actually, now that i’m thinking about all the clean-up i’d have to do with dogs…hmm. maybe i’d make it 1 rottweiler and 4 stuffed animal dogs. 😛

saturday 9: black is black

Saturday 9: Black Is Black (1966)

1) Black is this week’s signature color because Friday, November 27, was “Black Friday,” when retailers cut their prices and consumers flock to the stores. Did you score any “Black Friday” bargains?
no, i havenʻt. i donʻt want to deal with all that. it makes me sad.

2) WalMart, Best Buy, Toys R Us and Target have all heavily advertised their “Black Friday” sales. If you could have a $50 gift card to one of those stores, which would choose? What would you spend the $50 on?
hmm. maybe toys r us, so i can get a video game. actually, i want a 3DS, but itʻs way more than $50. iʻd probably have a better selection at best buy, but iʻm still boycotting them. 😛

3) Star Wars items are predicted to be big sellers this Black Friday. Are you a big sci-fi fan? Are there any sci-fi fans on your holiday gift list?
no, not really. i donʻt think i know of any, either.

4) Feasting and football are also popular Thanksgiving weekend pastimes. Do your Thursday-Sunday plans include pigging out or watching a game?
i saw a little of the game, because my mom had it on, but i didnʻt really pay attention. it was more for the company. we did have a nice dinner, though. my sister was even able to join us, which is rare.

5) At Thanksgiving dinners, Crazy Sam’s homemade gravy is always a hit. (Probably because she’s so generous with the cognac, which gives the gravy a nutty taste.) Do you have a signature dish?
no. i always make something different each year.

6) What did you give thanks for on Thanksgiving 2015?
family. ❤️

7) Monday is Cyber Monday, when shoppers can save big online. Do you shop confidently over the Internet, or do you worry about security breaches and identity theft?
i guess i worry a little; i do always check if thereʻs a little lock thingie in the address bar. but i donʻt shop as confidently as i once did.

8) This week’s featured band, Los Bravos, was international. Their members came from both Germany and Spain. If you could travel to any foreign country in the world, which would you choose?
iʻm intrigued about new zealand since my cousins just went down there and canʻt stop talking about it. iʻve also always wanted to travel around europe, specifically greece and maybe england, but there are other places iʻd like to see, too, such as spain and italy.

9) The band’s name, Los Bravos, can be translated to mean, “The Brave.” Do you consider yourself gutsy?
no, not really, although some people consider it gutsy that i stand in front of 45 7-year olds every day and make them listen and learn. but, really, iʻm as timid as they come.

Would you rather be too hot or too cold?hmm…too cold, i think. but i get cold easily.
Would you rather have a cook or a maid? a maid. please.

saturday 9: perfect storm

Saturday 9: Perfect Storm (2014)

1) This song is about “the thrill of a lifetime” kind of love. Do you believe we each get one great love? Or do you think it’s possible to fall in love more than once?
i think it’s possible to fall in love more than once. i’m envious of those that do find their one great love, but for most of us, we fall multiple times.

2) Brad Paisley endured his own “perfect storm” in 2010, when he lost his guitars in the massive flood that hit Nashville. Tell us about a time when you had to clean up after Mother Nature.
i’ve been pretty lucky in that the natural disasters that have happened here have not affected me very much. i hope i didn’t just jinx myself, though.

3) He is married to actress Kimberly Williams, who played Steve Martin’s daughter in the Father of the Bride movies. He has admitted he was a little in love with her before he met because he’d seen her on screen. Do you have a crush on anyone right now?
aw, how sweet. i have a couple of celebrity crushes. 😛

4) He’s a passionate Cleveland Browns fan. Are you following the NFL this season?
here and there.

5) Brad has developed his own line of western wear for Boot Barn, including some pricey items. (A “Perfect Storm” felt hat goes for $230.) What’s the most expensive item you’ve added to your wardrobe recently?
gosh! most of my clothes are very cheap! i couldn’t see spending $230 for any type of clothing, let alone a hat! i’d rather buy $5 shirts at walmart–they do the same job. the only thing i think that’s expensive in my closet is the dress i used for a performance many, many years ago. i don’t ever wear it out normally. but recently?? hmm. maybe a $12 pair of pants. i don’t spend a lot on clothes, as you can see.

6) “Paisley” is also a term for a popular print. Are you wearing a print or solid right now?
solid, but it’s got some embroidery.

7) Crazy Sam is not a big country fan, but she can sing along with this song because it played so very often at a bar she frequents. What’s the last song you sang?
“watch me.” i know. it’s been stuck in my head all week. even my son is like, “please stop singing that song.” 😛 but the last whole song i sang was “open arms.” the opening strains started as i was driving home yesterday and then it cut off, so i sang the whole song by myself. 😛

8) Though Brad Paisley has recorded songs about drinking, he never touches alcohol. His favorite beverage is Yoohoo, a chocolate beverage bottled by the Dr. Pepper/Snapple Company. What’s the last beverage you drank directly from the bottle?
water. boring, but it’s pretty much all i drink.

9) Random question from a Sat9er: What’s your favorite handmade item?
well, yesterday i went to the 5th of 9 baby showers this year, and the honoree loves owls, so i made a cute owl diaper cake for her. it came out really nice, if i may say so myself. i wanted to make one for me, too! 😛 but since that was given away, the thing that i own that is my favorite handmade item right now is probably my blanket. i made the one i’m using now, but i also have a blanket made by my aunty when i was a baby that i still have. it brings back many memories since i used it as i was growing up.

saturday 9: the night the lights went out in georgia

Saturday 9: The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia (1972)

1) The lyrics tell us about a young man who stopped at a bar named Webb’s before heading home. What’s the last restaurant or bar you visited? What did you order?
well, i think it’s considered more “fast food” than a restaurant, although we did sit down and dine there…we went to zippy’s a couple of weeks ago. i ordered the chili bowl, plain and with no beans.

2) In this video, Vicki Lawrence is obviously lip synching. If you had to participate in a competition, would you do better at karaoke or lip synching? And what song would you choose to perform?
i would do better lip synching. i can’t sing for beans. lately i’ve been on a pat benatar kick, so maybe something like “shadows of the night” or “we belong” or “promises in the dark.” those are all much too ambitious for me to sing at karaoke–they’d have to be lip-synched.

3) Back when this song was popular, so was the Rubik’s Cube. Can you solve that 3-D puzzle?
ha. why, yes, i can. 😀 i’m also on a kick for that, too. my son asked for a rubik’s cube when we were at the perot museum, so i got him one at the gift shop. um. i have been the one playing with it nonstop at home! i give it to him to mess up for me, and then i solve it, and then i whack it back down for him to mess up for me again. needless to say, he’s pretty tired of that right now, heehee. 😛 i can solve the thing in just under 2 minutes (just like justin bieber! heh). my son can solve it, too, but he takes a bit longer, but i know i can’t brag too much because he’ll probably soon beat me. so i’m always fiddling with that thing lately. and then last weekend we saw the 2×2 rubik’s cube at target, and i was wondering how could that be a challenge? it’s only 2×2!! so i got it “for my son,” and he told me it’s actually pretty hard. i said how? it’s only 2×2! so he gave it to me and said try! um. yeah. i had to look up how to do it after being stumped with the bottom layer for about 10 minutes. *blush* but now i can solve that, too. i even got an app on my phone so that i can play while waiting at places, and it has the 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, and 5×5 versions on there! i’ve mastered the 2×2 and 3×3, but am currently working on the 4×4. it’s tough, but i shall conquer that, too! muahahaha! 😛

…and i had no idea the rubik’s cube came out in the ’70s?? i thought it was an ’80s thing. i never played with one until then, anyway.

4) Vicki Lawrence is a hyphenate, meaning she’s a comedienne-actress-singer. Using hyphens, describe yourself.
although my profession is only one word, there are a whole bunch of other things that we end up doing that can be tacked together using hyphens. 😛

5) Back in the early 1970s, songwriter Bobby Russell first offered this song to Cher, who refused it. Give us the name of a song Cher did record.
“if i could turn back time” is the one that springs to mind, especially since i think about that all the time. i really despise getting old.

6) Vicki Lawrence won her first big break playing Carol Burnett’s kid sister because of her resemblance to the star. Have you ever been told you look like a celebrity?
i love stories like that, like how david hyde pierce got the part of niles because of his resemblance to kelsey grammer, but he did so well and got famous through that. i don’t look like any celebrity, nor have i ever been told that i look like one.

7) She also starred on Mama’s Family in the role of matriarch of an argumentative Southern clan. As we head into the holiday season, do your plans involve a lot of family time?
sigh. i really don’t know. we used to be such a tight-knit family, but we’re so scattered now. i don’t think there will be as much time with the extended family, but hopefully there will be a lot of time with the main family.

8) After The Carol Burnett Show and Mama’s Family, Vicki became a staple on daytime TV. She hosted Win, Lose or Draw and was a contestant on The Match Game and $25,000 Pyramid. Do you watch much daytime TV?
not any more, because i’m at work. and, also, because i don’t have a tv. but that’s how i most remember vicki lawrence, from all her appearances on game shows. i used to watch soooo many game shows! those were great.

9) Random question provided by a Sat 9er: Bugs/insects. Do you like ’em or fear ’em? Tell us something/anything you know about them.
i fear them. ugh! they creep me out. i wasn’t so creeped out as a little girl–i was the only girl in a bevy of boy cousins growing up. naturally, i’d try to tag along with them, and they’d try to get rid of me by catching preying mantises and grasshoppers and shoving them in my face but i didn’t mind. now, though…they give me the shivers. especially centipedes. *shudder* but i just listened to a podcast on mosquitoes, so here are some tidbits: there are over 27,000 different types of mosquitoes. the word is spanish for “little fly,” and they are in the fly family, scientifically, although the females are the only ones in that whole fly family that has a proboscis for biting. they only bite when they have a bunch of eggs ready to be laid, so when you smash a mosquito that is biting you, you not only killed the mother, but all the potential little mosquitoes that were waiting for the blood meal. they have special sensors that can detect carbon dioxide and lactic acid (what we exhale) and heat (something that’s alive), so they are able to hone in on the target from 100 feet away. they are a host for quite a few diseases, so not only is a bite annoying, but it could also make you very sick. and we used to press our fingernail into the bite in a shape of a cross–that actually helps with the itch. the itch is caused by an allergic reaction to the enzymes in the mosquito’s saliva. and last tidbit: a mosquito will keep drinking until its abdomen is full. there is a nerve on the mosquito that tells it when to stop drinking–if that nerve is severed, the mosquito will just keep on drinking until it bursts. gross. and that is all the trivia i know about mosquitoes. *bow* talk about walking around with a bunch of useless information in my head 😛

saturday 9: all random

Saturday 9: All Random

This week’s Saturday 9 is refreshingly theme free, featuring questions submitted by regular Saturday 9ers.

Crazy Sam really appreciates all the help she received with this week’s meme, and is jealously protecting all your unused questions. Expect to see them sprinkled throughout Saturday 9s in the future.

1) Do you prefer your pickle sliced thin, sliced thick, or in a spear?
i like the spears. i’m always thrilled when i receive pickles like that at restaurants.

2) What kind of eggs do you like best for breakfast?
i usually opt for scrambled, but as a kid, i loved over easy. on loco mocos, i always request over easy.

3) If you got 2 pennies for change, would you pocket them or leave them on the counter for the next person?
i pocket them. that’s why my wallet is thick with coins.

4) You’re now in charge of the manners for the planet. Tell us the new rules for cellphone etiquette.
i don’t think it’d be new–still the common courtesy ones, like put the phone away when someone is talking to you! i was talking to a dad about his daughter’s routines and schedules and the whole time, his eyes were glued to his phone. he never looked up once. even when he drops her off or picks her up, his eyes are still on his phone; she’s all excited to see him and goes running to him, and he maybe looks up enough to make sure that’s his daughter hugging him, and then his eyes go right back to his phone. so irritating. same goes for when you’re talking to people, their phone rings, and then they immediately pick up and begin talking, and not like a “i’ll call you back later” type of thing, but just talk, and i’m standing there mid-sentence sometimes, thinking, well, i guess *i’m* not that important. and i try to slink away. this is why i hate talking to people. 😛

5) You’re about to write a novel. What genre will it be (sci fi, chick lit, historical fiction, comic …)?
it would probably be some sort of realistic fiction–that’s the type i wrote in high school. it might be considered “chick lit” but not that much, i don’t think.

6) Is it a bad thing to lie to save a friend’s feelings?
i don’t think so, but i know more than a few who are just blunt and will tell you straight up, feelings spared or not.

7) Is your big toe your longest toe?
no, the toe next to the big toe is the same height.

8) Hot stone massage: yea or nay?
i’ve never had a massage. if i was cold, maybe i’d like a hot stone one.

9) Do you check the mirror before going out?
no, although sometimes i do catch my reflection in the car windows, which allows me to see that my clothes are wrinkled and hair is messy. 😛 but my reaction is always, “oh well!” and just get in the car because i can’t be bothered to go change or whatever.

saturday 9: thriller

Saturday 9: Thriller (1983)

1) In this video, Michael Jackson is transformed into a “werecat,” with fangs, claws, yellow eyes and whiskers. What monster or ghoul frightened you the most?
i’m a scaredy cat, so most things frighten me. i think the most are the zombies.

2) Michael sings that evil things that will be lurking “close to midnight.” Where will you be at midnight tonight?
at home, snuggled in bed. 🙂

3) Horror movie icon Vincent Price does the voice over on “Thriller.” What’s your favorite scary movie?
i don’t like scary movies. i watched poltergeist when i was younger and had to cover my eyes at certain parts. i haven’t watched a scary movie since.

4) Mr. Price’s House of Wax, made in 1953, was one of the first 3D movies. What’s the most recent 3D movie you saw?
hmm. was it up? or it might have been journey to the center of the earth or something like that. it’s been a few years.

5) Horror fans might be surprised to know that, despite his sinister image, Mr. Price enjoyed very genteel and relaxing hobbies, like cooking, gardening and painting. What would we be surprised to learn about you?
most people are surprised to know that i used to perform given how much i don’t like being in the spotlight now.

6) A Halloween tradition is the jack-o-lantern. Did you carve a pumpkin this year?
no, but we might this afternoon. actually, i’d like to paint one, rather than carve. i saw some cute tsumpkins, and i want to make an eeyore one!

7) According to Yahoo!, the most popular costume of Halloween 2014 was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Will you be in costume this Halloween? If not, who or what would you most like to dress up as?
i didn’t dress up this year even though my current colleagues are known for dressing up every year. we had an all-day meeting yesterday which is why most didn’t dress up.

8) When you went trick or treating as a kid, did you usually wear a store-bought costume, or was it DIY?
a mixture of both. my mom is a good sewer, but she hates sewing. so sometimes it would be handmade, and sometimes not. the past few years when i’ve had to dress up for work, i made my costumes.

9) When trick-or-treaters show up at your door, what candy will they get?
invisible kind. 😛 i won’t be home tonight.

saturday 9: it don’t come easy

Saturday 9: It Don’t Come Easy (1971)

1) This was Ringo’s first big hit as a solo artist. Who is your favorite member of his old, very famous group, The Beatles?
i think it was paul mccartney. i thought he was cute, i thought it was cool that his guitar went the “wrong” way, and i knew he wrote quite a bit of the songs. and then it was through some sort of music challenge or something that i found out about the whole “paul is dead” thing (i had heard my parents talk about it when i was younger, when they scoured their album covers for clues, but nothing more than that). i must’ve spent half a day just reading with much fasciation everything out there on the internet about this conspiracy theory. then through a meme, i think, i read about the feud between paul and john, which made me spend another half a day looking up stuff about that, and that made me sad. i didn’t really know john as he was killed before i started my music interest; paul (and george, whom i also liked) had a few hits during my teen years that made me interested in them. but it wasn’t until just recently that i used all the wonderful resources on the internet to find out more about them, and i just got sucked into it all.

2) In this song, Ringo sings that you have to pay your dues. Do you belong to any organizations that require you to pay dues?
yes, one for my job, and one for the association where i live.

3) He also sings, “you don’t have to shout.” When did you last raise your voice?
i don’t raise my voice very often. it might’ve been thursday when i had to tell kids who were just too engaged in what they were doing to care that recess was over and they needed to put away their things and clean up.

4) Ringo has two piercings on each ear and one tattoo on each arm. Do you have more piercings or body art?
i don’t have any tattoos, so i have more piercings (one on each ear, nothing fancy).

5) Ringo gave his first wife, Maureen, a one-of-a-kind birthday gift. Frank Sinatra made a recording of “The Lady Is a Tramp” personalized to her. Tell us about one of your most memorable birthday celebrations.
I can still remember my 4-year old birthday party, snips of it. mostly because my reclusive uncle whom i rarely saw and knew very little about surprised me by actually showing up, and not only that, but i saw him coming from a way off (it was at a beach park where parking is hard to find, causing people to have to park far away and walk over) holding this gigantic stuffed animal on his shoulder. it was bigger than i was! but i loved that stuffed animal and always had it on my bed, even through college. i think it’s still at my mom’s. another memorable one was one that was not memorable because it was happy. my baby sister’s best friend’s funeral was on my 23rd birthday. she was like another little sister to me, and her death was so unexpected, for someone so young and who seemed so healthy. i cried and cried that whole day, even before and after the funeral. just when i thought i’d get it together, i’d see like her dad crumble down, or her two young brothers huddled together and crying, and i would start crying all over again. even after the funeral, the image of her dad breaking down would just fill my thoughts, and i’d cry. it couldn’t be helped that the funeral landed on my birthday, but i was just miserable that day, sad to be celebrating the loss of one life on the day that you celebrate living. so i remember that birthday (images of the dad still flash into my mind to this day) well, sadly.

6) Ringo appeared as Mr. Conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine. He recorded the narration for the entire first season in just a week. Tell us what you did last week.
wow, i didn’t know he was on that show. well, i never sat and watched it, but my niece was totally into it. last week was just a typical work work for me. nothing really extraordinary, other than being the first week back after fall break, so a bit of a downer, mostly. 😛

7) Ringo also did the narration for Ladybird children’s books. Do you like audiobooks?
wow, i’m trying to think if i even know what his voice sounds like? seems he does a lot of narration. i’m not sure i ever listened to an audiobook. i had the little 45s i used to play on my record player when i was younger, which would read the book, complete with the ting! of the bell to signal for you to turn the page, but i would follow along in the actual copy of the book, so it wasn’t all completely audio.

8) As a boy in Liverpool, Ringo loved watching American westerns. His passion for the genre is reflected in the outfit he’s wearing on the sleeve for “It Don’t Come Easy.” Do you like cowboy movies/shows?
eh. i don’t think there’s any i really watched. for me, depends on the storyline. i could watch a show about anything as long as the storyline holds my interest.

9) You know what else don’t come easy? Nine questions every week. Crazy Sam has heard it all: this meme asks too many movie questions, too many questions about sports, too many questions that sound familiar … OK, now it’s your turn. Help a tired meme mistress out. Contribute a random question that is not about movies or sports (pro or collegiate) and has never been asked before on this meme. Sam will compile these for an all-random Saturday 9 in November. That way she’ll get a much-appreciated week off. Thanks for your help!
oh gosh! this makes me sad. i don’t have any complaints about this meme; it’s one of the few i enjoy! i really, really appreciate the time and research that goes into making this meme! sigh.

i am so not good at asking questions. hmm. i’m going to have to deal with bugs (which i can’t stand) in the next few weeks, so … enlighten me. which bug do you find most interesting, and why? then i can learn some good things about bugs. 🙂

saturday 9: beyond the sea

Saturday 9: Beyond the Sea (1959)

1) This song mentions golden sands. When do you think you’ll next visit the beach?
i’m not sure? i haven’t been to the beach in a while. when i was younger, i went all the time.

2) Shortly after “Beyond the Sea” hit the charts, Bobby Darin met and married movie sweetheart Sandra Dee. Her squeaky-clean image is spoofed in the song, “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee,” from Grease. Can you name another song from Grease?
sad fact: i can name all the songs from grease 🙂 except maybe the instrumentals that i don’t know the titles of or songs that were playing the background like on the jukebox or whatever…but the songs the characters sang, i know. as little girls, my sisters and i watched that movie every single day, sometimes twice! we can still recite lines from that movie! “grease” “summer nights” “rydell fight song” “hopelessly devoted to you” “beauty school dropout” “hound dog” “rock n roll is here to stay” “tears on my pillow” “born to hand jive” “blue moon” “sandy” “greased lightning” “there are worse things i could do” “you’re the one that i want” “we go together”
yeah. sad.

3) Years earlier, Bobby had an ill-fated romance with singer Connie Francis. According to Ms. Francis, Darin wanted to marry her, but her father forbade it. Have you ever had a relationship that your parents disapproved of?
i don’t think so. only after the fact, when they saw how much i was hurt.

4) Bobby was a Renaissance man: Grammy-winning singer, Oscar-nominated actor, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and an excellent chess player. Are you good at chess?
no, i am not. my son was in a chess club in school but he had no one to practice with since i don’t know how to play it and refused to be taught. 😛

5) A car buff, he drove a 1960 custom car that was so unique and spectacular it’s now in a Detroit museum. The bright red paint was mixed with ground diamonds to ensure that it sparkled in the sun. Each of the four bucket seats had its own ac/heat control and radio speaker. The steering wheel was slightly squared for easier handling. What features would your dream car have?
wow. i just like mine to work! maybe a car that can drive itself? i don’t like driving. then when it gets to its destination if it can fold up into a little toy like transformers that i can just keep in my purse, then i wouldn’t have to worry about parking.

6) Beyond the Sea is also the name of the 2004 screen biography in which Kevin Spacey played Bobby Darin. Who would you choose to play you in the story of your life?
hmm. i’m not sure. no one famous really looks like me (which is why they’re famous). i guess anyone that can play drab and boring. if they can glamour down to me, they’d probably win an oscar. 😛

7) When he was just 8 years old, Bobby Darin was stricken with rheumatic fever, and the disease left him with a dangerously weakened heart. Did you spend much time in the hospital when you were a kid?
no, not really.

8) In 1959, when “Beyond the Sea” was popular, Alaska became our 49th state. What comes to mind when you think of Alaska?
and we became the 50th several months later! when i think of alaska i just shiver and think of cold.

9) In 1959, Conair introduced the first hair dryer developed for home use. Is there a hair dryer in your bathroom right now?
no. the air is my hair dryer 😛

Saturday 9: Cheerleader (2014)

nope!

2) Beyond cheerleaders and the big game, homecoming is a time for parades. Have you ever ridden on a float?
yes, i have.

3) OMI sings that his girl is always there when he needs her. Who do you know you can always count on?
family members.

4) This video features a sandy beach, a rocky shore and palm trees. What do you see outside your window right now?
it’s nice and sunny out. there’s some foliage and the road.

5) In the lyrics we hear that his cheerleader girlfriend is “like a genie in a bottle.” Who would rather hang around with? Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie or Samantha from Bewitched?
when i used to watch these, i always wished i could be jeannie. now that i’m older, i think i’d rather be around samantha. jeannie is just a bit too desperate.

6) OMI is from Jamaica. Have you ever visited that island country?
no, i haven’t.

7) Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica in 1494. Columbus Day will soon be upon us (October 12). Is it a big deal in your community?
no. we don’t even get it off, even though it’s been said we have too many holidays.

8) Queen Elizabeth is Jamaica’s head of state. Her Majesty is now 89 years old and a great grandmother. Who is the oldest person in your life?
my grandma was 89 when she passed away a few years ago. my other grandma is 85, but she has an iPhone and posts to facebook and instagram, like any other person. 🙂

9) Her Majesty was named Elizabeth Alexandra Mary after three of her relatives, who also were queens. Were you named after anyone?
my middle name is my grandma’s name. when she passed away, i was given her jewelry that had her name on them. if i ever have a daughter, i plan on giving her my mom’s name as her middle name, as well.
