saturday 9: star-spangled banner

The Star Spangled Banner

1) Are you a veteran? Are there veterans in your family? (We are grateful and want to hear about it.)
no, i’m not a veteran. i had a neighbor who was. he was already suffering from flashbacks from the war and dealing with those episodes when his daughter (who was my sister’s best friend) mysteriously died in the mid ’90s, and they think it’s because he was exposed to agent orange, which affected the genes he passed on to her (they think it might have been some autoimmune thing but it was extremely rare, but i guess showing up in children of vets). so he fell into an even deeper depression, feeling all the guilt for his daughter’s suffering, and ultimately, her death. i mean, no one likes to have to bury their child, but to know that you may have had some part in it because of a stupid war that was already haunting you…ugh. he totally withdrew and never left the house, where he had a whole shrine there for his daughter, with candles and her pictures, and a few of her favorite stuffed animals. when he did venture out of the house, he snapped at anyone who walked past him. it was so sad. his family tried desperately to get him to take his depression meds but he would refuse, and would just drink until he passed out. it wasn’t until a few years ago, when his son had a daughter that they named after her, that he kinda stopped the self-destruction. his granddaughter also looks a bit like his daughter, so i think that kinda helped a bit, too. he stopped his drinking and started taking his meds, and now he’s out and about again, chatting and smiling like i remember him all those years before his daughter’s death. so seeing this example makes me not like all these wars that we go into. if the leader of the country has a problem with the other leader of the country, put *those* two together to duke it out. don’t make thousands of innocent people fight your fight. even if they survive the war, they still come back with the memories, and that’s tough to deal with for some people. i know it would haunt *me*, the way i hold on to some memories that make me so scared to do things. i can’t imagine what being in a war would do to my psyche. 😦

2) Memorial Day also kicks off the summer season. What’s your favorite picnic food?

3) Let’s celebrate the Memorial Day holiday with ice cream. What’s your favorite flavor?
mint chocolate chip.

4) This marks the weekend when Americans step up their outdoor activity and do things they may not have been able to do during the winter months. For example, when is the last time you rode a bike?
i don’t know how to ride a bike. ^^’

5) Or went hiking?
last november, on an excursion. there have been opportunities since then to go, but because of medical things, i haven’t gone.

6) Or rode a horse?
i have never ridden a horse. i feel sorry for horses. i wouldn’t even go on pony rides they sometimes have at carnivals. i always felt bad for them.

7) Or toasted a marshmallow?
it’s been a long time since that. we used to always toast marshmallows at my grandma’s every sunday, because my uncle would always hibachi and as the embers were dying, all us kids would get the marshmallows and bamboo skewers and toast marshmallows. memories. *sniff*

8) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or window fan on?
no, because it is early morning right now. i did have to turn the a.c. on last night because it was quite a sticky night. but now it’s nice and cool.

9) Crazy Sam needs your help: What song or a performer would you like to see featured in a Saturday 9 this summer?
i’m an ’80s girl so any song from that era instantly brings back a flood of memories. 🙂 i’m also partial to one direction. 😀

  1. I’m also an 80s fan. 😉

  2. That is a sad story about your soldier friend. I am glad it has a somewhat happy ending. Poor fellow.

  3. I feel bad for those that war effects but losing his daughter too is beyond hurt. Thank goodness he is doing better now.

    mmmm….mint chocolate chip…….it’s tempting…!

  4. What interesting answers you had this week.Especially the story you told on #1. I hope he continues to do well.

  5. War really can be a terrible option.
