Question of the Day: Space Invaders

What is your all time favorite video game (arcade or game system)?

this is so hard because of all the different games i’ve ever played and all the ones i’ve enjoyed. i wouldn’t be able to choose just one.

my very first exposure to video games was a video game system that i can’t remember the name (it wasn’t atari) that you could play pong on and some other cannon game thingie. didn’t care for it. but then we got an apple iie. man oh man! i was big on those text adventures. my first “favorite” was transylvania, which we actually played on cassette tapes…this was when i was in 7th grade, and we’d do this during computer class. i just loved the apples so much, i begged my dad to get one, when he started talking about getting a computer for home. so i think i was 8th grade or so…actually, maybe a bit later…when we got an apple iie. and the first game i bought on my own was wishbringer. LOVED it. it came with its own little white glow-in-the-dark “wishbringer” stone and a little pouch thingie and a map…and then i found out i can still play it today, online (thanks, scrivener!!!) and wow, does that bring back memories!!! anyway, i loved those text adventure games. i think that’s why i got so into muds when i was first testing out the internet, way back in ‘93. they sorta reminded me of those early text adventures…yet you could do it and communicate with others at the same time. :)

the other game that i absolutely loved on the apple iie was a game called spare change. it was so funny! you collect coins, and these robots are after you, but if you drop some of your coins in the jukebox, the robots will run to the jukebox and start jamming! hilarious! the song was … well, i don’t know the title of it, but it’s a common song. doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-dooooo… and the other song i learned how to play on guitar … i think it’s a common bass riff, but i don’t know the name of it. but i used to love that game, it was sooo funny. so i was sad when the disk got scratched or something, and the disk-drive would make that awful brrrrr-brrrrrr noises. then i actually found a while ago, someone had it online! but it was a darn .exe file!!! grrrrrrr…

another game we all enjoyed was lode runner. even our dad would fight us for time on the computer to play that game! i still even remember that sound it made as it …dug?… holes in the ground. i used to love “swinging” on that vine thingie.

at arcades, i’d always play qbert. i can still hear its swearing as it fell off! heeheehee. i also liked joust and pac man. OH! and dig dug. heehee that song is ingrained in my memory. but now, when i think about it…it was kinda gross, yeah? blowing up the monsters until they pop? eww.

then came the nintendo. i loved (and still do!) the zelda series. i played the first one the other day and cracked up…my, how far it’s come! now it’s like so realistic looking. then it was typical block art. i also liked the duck hunt, just for its originality, though i hated shooting the ducks. i liked the clay discs better.

supernintendo then came out. my favorite was the donkey kong games. and those mario games, too. but i liked that donkey kong was getting his own games :) i also LOVED mario paint. it had a mouse! i just loved the way it started “boom shakalakalaka boom shakalaka … mario paint!!! ho ho ho!” there were two different beginnings, and if i got the one that wasn’t the boom shakalaka, i’d restart it until i got it! heehee. but i loved that game. it was so different from the regular games.

nintendo 64…again, loved donkey kong country (i can still do the d.k. rap! heehee). loved zelda games. got into pokemon, so pokemon snap and pokemon colosseum were favorites as well! i also liked wordtris and dr mario and kirby’s avalanche and the lost vikings!!! i loved that game. i really love puzzle games, but since i loved pokemon & d.k., i just had to get any of those games. plus zelda, since it, in a way, reminds me of the text adventures.

game boy…i got the classic one…i loved qix…and the mario & wario games. but the game i will play over and over and over … pokemon! when i first heard of pokemon, i thought it was just a silly little cartoon. but then i got the game. man! i was hooked. then i became invested in the characters in the cartoon. and that was it! there was no turning back. anyway, only a couple of years ago, i finally got a gameboy advance (why did the advance, which showed color, only take 2 batteries, while the classic, which showed in gray/peagreen, need 4 batteries?!?!), in a lovely clear pink. it was only $45! then a few months after that, i got a fire red sp, for $75. yay! no more spending $ on batteries. :) which is good, because i was just playing every night, for hours. and i loved that it took all past gameboy games, too, so i could play that pokemon yellow every now and then ;)

then came the cube. i actually got the cube like a year after it came out, when it was much cheaper (and what i’ll probably do for the wii, too). again, i love the mario (and luigi!) games, i love donkey kong konga (interesting new way to play a game!), i love pokemon and zelda. i especially loved pikmin (new puzzle game!). kinda reminded me of lemmings. OH! lemmings! another game i loved on the nintendo 64! and i just recently also found online. the internet rocks!!!

for computer games, i loved life or death, which was a surgery type game. it was sooo cool. i loved it. i loved problem-solving and making the proper diagnosis and curing the patient. i also loved miracle! that was so much fun. but the same–any kind of puzzle game, or rpg game? loved! especially the king’s quest / leisure suit larry / roger wilco games from sierra. so much fun! i actually bought the anthologies that were like $90 or so…but i just loved those games. even though i’d pass it, i’d want to play it again. just last summer, i was at the scholastic warehouse sales and i found a $5 game called zoo empire. my boy loves zoo things, so i thought i’d get it–it was cheap, even if it was for the PC. i figured we could use my sister’s computer whenever we were at grandma’s. she had played it first, and told me it was confusing–she couldn’t figure it out. she asked me to try it and see if i could figure out how to do it. well, i did…and i was hooked! big time!!! i could stay on that game for hours. i had to find a mac equivalent. i found zoo tycoon…which was too expensive. i found others, like zoo vet, and wildlife tycoon, and got those, along with lemonade tycoon. i just love those now! i guess i could get into sims if i could ever move out. i’m always stuck with such a whiny character. anyway, i really like those games now.

because of wanting to get zoo tycoon for cheaper than the mac versions for selling for (double the price of the PC version!), i checked half.com and found out that there was a zoo tycoon for nintendo! i quickly bought one that was only $10. i eagerly awaited for it to arrive. i was SO excited when the package finally came, 3 weeks later. i tore it open…

…and found out it was for nintendo d.s. RATS. my nephew had a d.s., which he NEVER played with. so i’d go to their house and use his d.s. to play my game. i’d stay up until like 3am just playing zoo tycoon. i’m nuts ;)

but after complaining to my other sister how our nephew has a d.s. that he NEVER plays with, i guess she felt sorry for me, and decided to get it for me, under the guise of “for all the help you’ve given me the past few months” (medical problems, plus her mom-in-law’s death), but really, i think it was to shut me up. so she got me a d.s., especially since the price was dropping, because the d.s. lite was coming out. and i’m SO happy with it. i especially love big brain academy & brain age. so fun! but then again, i’m a nerd. i also love my pokemon game and can’t wait for pokemon ranger! that sounds like fun. and of course, zoo tycoon :)

i’ve also rediscovered computer games–i like diner dash, and i like zoo tycoon (i broke down and bought it! sigh), and i like fish tycoon, and i like scrabble. i like online games, too, like scrabble and magic mirror and cake mania! woohoo!

heehee *sheepishgrin* i am SUCH a gamesaddict. *sigh* well, anyway, that’s why i can’t choose just one for a favorite. there are so many different genre, and i think i like a few from each genre…can’t narrow it down to an all-time favorite! i just love games :)

and wow, what a wordy post for a simple question ;) heeheeheehee

from here.
